Note: The Pushing Uphill archive is for informational purposes only; the programs themselves are not permanently archived for listening on demand. about pushing uphill
Pushing Uphill is a highly eclectic program series of American and international roots music and other genres. The approach overall is thematic, conceptually and/or musically. New editions generally air on STRR and also are made available to ST members on demand at hifi sound for reasonable periods; archived programs are recycled periodically as well for on-demand listening when possible. The program may include talk or be talk-free; in the latter case, notes generally are provided by the host in lieu of on-air exposition. Please note that in Jan 2004, two former STRR program series - The Sixties and Endless Highway - were discontinued and integrated into Pushing Uphill. Hence, these themes will be further explored as new Pushing Uphill programs, and we will recycle some of the programs from the original two series under the Pushing Uphill umbrella, as well.
about the host
STRR Program Director Michael Westerfield is or has been a writer, musician, wall painter, songwriter, food services worker, high-schooland college English teacher, editor, bartender, marketing professional, vending machine hauler, backpacker, (sub)urban(e) desperado, and more over the course of his life. Born in NYC, Westerfield grew up in the Bronx and Queens, and later moved to the NJ shore. His ramblin' soul has landed him for periods in Fort Lauderdale, Nashville, Corpus Christi, Santa Fe, NH, CA, and a whole lotta places in NJ all mentioned in Dave Van Ronk's "Garden State Stomp."
In the early 70s, Westerfield was a volunteer for KTAO, a pioneer community radio station in Los Gatos, CA (see Tracking Sisyphus), which kindled a lifelong interest in the possibilities of radio as a creative and vital medium that serves the needs of particular communities away from the interference of commercial interests. Along these lines, Westerfield founded Sisyphus Tracks in September 2000 for reasons that regularly confound him despite his passion, and he's been pushing uphill on this note ever since.
